Meals On Wheels

Meals On Wheels

On the 4th. February 1974 following a conversation between Mrs Ita Stephens and Monsignor Glennon (Parish Priest at the time) the first Parish Meals On Wheels where delivered to Six homes. Within a month the team of drivers and helpers where delivering meals around the Parish which were supplied by the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. However there was a demand for more. Monsignor Glennon approached the Holy Faith Sisters in Glasnevin who kindly agreed to supply more meals.

Ita co-ordinated the Parish Meals on Wheels for many years until 1987 when Kitty Houston took over the reins and co-ordinated the delivery of meals through-out the parish for a number of years. At this point Niamh Ni Nuallain took on the role of co-ordinator and Niamh continued to co-ordinate this very important work untill the end of 2008.

At the moment Francis Fleming, Lena Ward and Particia O Leary are co-ordinating the Meals on Wheels which is divided into two different areas Francis dealing with Linsey Road, Iona Road, Park, Crescent etc. down to Whitworth Road and surrounding areas. Lena and Patricia deal with Hollybank, Chaplegate, Botanic ave and the surrounding areas.

Meals cost €3.00 and are subsidised by the HSE. Referrals for meals on wheels usually come directly  from Millmount House if you would like to be included in the meals on wheels please contact:

In 1980 Sister Goretti of the Sisters of Charity in Gardiner Street took over the supplying of meals to our Parish and are still providing meals to this day.  The East Wall Community Centre also provided meals to our parish untill recently. Their work is very much appreciated.

At present an average of 30 - 40 meals are delivered daily all over the Parish by a great team of drivers and helpers who give of their time and energy so willingly. The team work off a rota which runs on a fortnightly basis. There are also a number of people on a reserve list who may not be able to commit to a set rota but can be called on in times of need.

If you would like to be part of this team on a regular basis once a fortnight between 11am and 1pm or if you feel you could help out from time to time please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. Ph. 8308257
